matterCast announces SVG based e-Publishing solution
Research Triangle Park, NC November 4th. 2002 – matterCast Inc.,
providers of content distribution and rights management products and solutions,
today announced the beta release and demonstration site for its SVG (Scalable
Vector Graphics) based e-Publishing and collaboration solution for serving
Adobe® PDF (Portable Document Format) content on the web. The first in a series
of planned releases aimed at automating the digital content supply chain,
matterCast’s SVG Document Server allows for the immediate and controlled online
distribution of PDF content in SVG format, combining the presentation quality
of PDF, the structural features of XML, the web based features of HTML and the
collaborative features of a networked environment.
“We are extremely excited about this technology and the possibilities it opens
up”, said Ranjiv Sharma, President, matterCast, Inc. “Many companies have huge
reserves of PDF content that they would like to make available on the web. The
online formats available to these companies have, so far, had major drawbacks.
HTML does not provide the presentation quality of PDF, and PDF distribution
does not allow for many web based business models. matterCast’s SVG solution
combines the benefits of PDF and HTML allowing for high quality documents to be
distributed with the ease and flexibility of web based business models. Whether
your document contains scientific notations, mathematical symbols or musical
notes, it will render and print exactly the same way using matterCast’s SVG
solutions.”
matterCast’s solution consists of a set of tools and components for automating
the workflow and deployment of PDF content as SVG. These tools include direct
PDF to SVG conversion, a browser-based SVG viewer, and the SVG Document Server.
matterCast’s direct PDF to SVG conversion maintains the fonts, layout and
graphics as well as internal and external document links. These SVG documents
can then be served by matterCast’s SVG Document Server, which includes
server-side components that provide value added features such as watermarking,
search hit highlighting, stream compression and masking of the document as well
as providing an integration point for custom business rules. In addition, the
Document Server provides centralized collaboration services to add workgroup
features such as document annotations, which are shared instantaneously among
workgroup members. matterCast’s enhanced document viewer is a brandable,
browser-based viewer, incorporating Adobe® SVG Viewer, that provides search,
zoom, print, page-by-page navigation as well as mark-up tools for annotating
the document.
SVG Demonstration Site
matterCast has launched its SVG Demonstration Site, to highlight some of the
capabilities of its SVG solutions. This site provides samples of SVG content
converted from PDF, served from matterCast’s SVG Document Server, and viewed
through matterCast’s SVG viewer. In addition, the site allows for the importing
of your own PDF content into the SVG Document Server, demonstrating the ease
and flexibility of distributing your PDF content on the web.

About SVG
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. It is a
W3C Standard and has the support of leading industry veterans including
Microsoft, Adobe, Sun, IBM, Cannon, HP, Kodak, Quark among others. SVG is a
language for describing two-dimensional graphics in XML. Because it is vector
based, SVG figures can scale to fit small devices like hand-held as well as
large monitors, without losing fidelity, thus making your documents more
portable than ever.
